Putting Playwrights First
We believe in the power, and the primacy, of the playwright. We are committed to producing new works that embrace the spirit of our mission statement: "Authentic. Original. Courageous. Theatre for everyone." To this end, Theatre 4the People has created several opportunities for playwrights to collaborate and develop work within the structure of a theatre company. Please visit our Playworks page to learn more about our writers' group and other opportunities.
Since 2015, Theatre 4the People's residency program invites one playwright each season to join us as a "Playwright In Residence." This residency can revolve around a single play moving through the development process into production, or around the development and workshopping of multiple pieces in various stages. To submit to be a Playwright In Residence, kindly review the current requirements below. Please note that these requirements may be modified or adjusted periodically.
The applicant must be a U.S. resident at the time of participation;
The applicant must have completed at least 1 full-length play or at least 3 one-act plays;
The applicant must have made a commitment to playwriting as a professional goal;
The applicant must have never received a production of his/her work in New York City that was larger than an Actors’ Equity Showcase Code presentation; and
The applicant must not be enrolled in a degree/certificate program at the time of participation.
